Imogen: Hey, can you roll out here? I wanna ask you something.
Jonathan: Uh, I’ve kinda got my hands in it, here.
Imogen: Pleaaase?
Panel 2 (Imogen kneels down beside Jonathan as he climbs out from under the car)
Imogen: So… uh… with the kids in school, I was thinking… I’ll have a lot of time on my hands, and… it might be possible for me to go back to college?
Panel 3 (Jonathan is wiping engine oil off his face while he listens)
Imogen, off-panel: Part-time, and during the day, so I’ll still be around for the kids.
Panel 4 (Imogen, playing with her braid and looking hopeful)
Imogen: What do you think?
Panel 5 (Jonathan, looking doubtful, and Imogen, holding her head in her hands)
Jonathan: It’s a great idea, but… why?
Imogen: I know. It’s kind of dumb, like… what am I gonna do with it?

My husband (who I am divorcing) also does this, and it just… nyurgh. What do you do when your partner constantly claims to support you, but then makes you doubt yourself at every turn?

I think asking why is a reasonable question. I hear self doubt rather than him actually undermining her,I think.
Exactly. I mean she didn’t seem that sure herself that it’s a good idea. And honestly getting asked this kind of helps me to figure out what I really want and why.
Agreed … and his response is going to be key here: does he confirm those self-doubts? Or does he encourage her to talk about why she does want it?
