NEW PAGE SIGN. We’re getting close to the end of the chapter! Next week will be the last page, and then I’ll take a few weeks break to work on the next one. And play video games. Lots of video games.

TRANSCRIPT
Panel 1 (Jonathan leaning against the car, knocking on it over his shoulder)
Jonathan: It’s not that. It’s just… college is really expensive, babe. We just got finished paying off my student loans, and this thing (SFX: thunk thunk) is on its last legs.
Panel 2 (Imogen looking doubtful)
Imogen: I don’t even know what I would study. The psych classes I took probably don’t still count, huh?
Panel 3 (Jonathan pulling Imogen in for a one-armed hug)
Jonathan: Yeah, you’ve been out of the game a while, champ.
Panel 4 (Close-up of Jonathan)
Jonathan: And, you know, the boys still need their mom.
Panel 5 (Jonathan’s left hand resting on Imogen’s folded hands, rings visible)
Imogen: It doesn’t matter anyway, if we can’t swing it.
Jonathan: If you’re looking for something to do while the kids are in school, you could always babysit. You’re a great mom.
💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
This is so undermining in such a “nice” way. It frustrates me and makes me angry. She also JUST said she’d only take classes while they’re also in school. Like, I know a lot happens that might send the kids home unexpectedly -especially unexpectedly- but damn. Plus, I imagine Imogen would rather not continue to care for children during her break from caring for children.
Loving this comic! Just finished reading through in one sitting. Love your style 🙂
I really like that, while Jonathan is dislikably controlling and not very empathetic or interested in Imogen’s perspective, he’s not presented as “MALE = BAD HORRIBLE NO GOOD”. I was a little worried last chapter when the “What, /your husband/ didn’t make you breakfast?” line rolled around; he looked and sounded very misogynist. I mean, it seems like he is – at least a little – but I’m glad he’s not the leering, nothing-but-an-excuse-for-a-villain type of misogynist that crops up in comics every so often. An unlikable but quite believable character ( ‘-‘)-b
I want to choke him. 😀
Oof. This is too close to home. I’m 30 and finally almost done with my bachelor’s. For the same reasons. I’m glad I cut out and I’m finally taking care of me.
Its amazing how subtle this kind of harm is. Its hard to even notice unless you’ve been trained for it.
The hardest part is that he probably does not realize what he’s doing. He thinks he’s being reasonable, instead of putting down her aspirations and pushing her back to being a “stay at home mom”.
I don’t know how to deal with that yet
